The order of the Temple is a religious and military order from the Christian chivalry of the Middle Ages, whose members are called the Knights Templar. This order was created on the occasion of the Council of Troyes, opened on January 13, 1129, from a militia called the Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon. He worked during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries in the accompaniment and protection of pilgrims for Jerusalem in the context of the holy war and the Crusades. He participated actively in the battles that took place during the Crusades and the Iberian Reconquest.

The tabard is a kind of overcoat that was weared in the Middle Ages over the armor. It served above all to show his coat of arms and his colors. The first tabards are tunics painted or formed of an assemblage of pieces of fabric of a tubular form, often devoid of sleeves.

The recognition of the order of the Temple was not only the development of a rule and a name, but also the attribution of a particular dress code specific to the order of the Temple. The coat of Templars referred to that of the Cistercian monks.

Only knights, brothers from the nobility, had the right to wear the white coat, symbol of purity of body and chastity. Templar iconography, whatever its form, indicated the Templars' belonging to Christendom and the red color recalled the blood shed by Christ.
